Upon our return from Winter Break on January 9, 2017, we will be adopting a new morning entry routine at Bakersfield P.S. Each day at 8:40 a.m. students will be permitted to enter the building and start getting ready for their day. Staff supervision will happen inside the building and at the regular entrance doors, rather than outside. Students will be free to enter the school through either one of the back tarmac doors or the parking lot doors at any time between 8:40 a.m. and 8:55 a.m.
Our intent in modifying the morning entry routine is to provide time for students to come in, get ready for their day and be prepared for class by the time the start-of-day bell rings. Students can change into their indoor shoes, visit their lockers, prepare their learning materials and agendas and line up outside their classroom door. It gives students a chance to ready themselves for the upcoming day and feel prepared to start with a calm and positive learning mindset.
Given this extra time to get ready, we are aiming for students to be lined up outside of their classrooms and ready for learning at our start time at 8:55 a.m. We look for your support in helping our student learn the importance of consistent punctuality. We do have a number of students arriving habitually late, missing learning and disrupting the learning of others when arriving to lessons already underway. As always, students arriving during or after O Canada and morning announcements will need to get a late slip from the office.
For students in Kindergarten, DECEs will be supervising students in their regular classrooms. Parents can walk their children into the kindergarten enclosures and right to the door for entry between 8:40 a.m. and 8:55. a.m. After this time, doors will be locked, and parents will need to bring students in through the parking lot doors to get a late slip from the office.
If driving your child to school, we encourage you to take advantage of this open entry routine by dropping off your child beginning at 8:40 a.m. With students no longer waiting outside in the cold for the entry bell, we hope to alleviate any last-minute congestion in the drop-off loop. As is our regular practice, cars are asked to pull as far forward in the loop as possible when dropping off, and students will be able to enter the school directly through the parking lot doors. Staff will continue to supervise the morning drop-off loop.
We have learned from many other schools adopting ‘open entry’ morning procedures with considerable success and hope this supports better morning transitions for students and enables more timely readiness for learning with fewer late arrivals. We thank you for your support and welcome any feedback.
