On behalf of our School Council, we’d like to cordially invite you to a parent evening with Dr. Shyamala Kiru on Thursday, January 26th at 7:00 p.m. at Bakersfield P.S.

Dr. Kiru is a Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Marriage and Family Therapist, and has served on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.  She holds a Masters in Counselling and a Doctorate in Marriage and Family.  She has almost 15 years experience working with individuals, couples and families.  In addition to her private practice, she is a mental health consultant, public speaker and media expert for sources such as Chatelaine, the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail. You can also find her on the panel of Discovery Channel’s National TV show, Canada’s Worst Driver.  Her background in fitness and nutrition lends a holistic, energized approach to mental health.  For more information about Dr. Kiru, please visit her website.  (Online resources related to children’s well-being are available on her site under the Resources section, Downloads link.)

The focus for the evening’s session will be on Fostering Confidence: Solutions for Overcoming Fear and Anxiety.  Topics include:

  • Why confidence is critical to success
  • The correlation between confidence and anxiety
  • How to identify anxiety, aka ‘The Confidence Killer’
  • Simple strategies to help kids boost confidence

This opportunity is entirely free, funded through a Parents Reaching Out (PRO) Grant from the Ontario Ministry of Education.

If you would like to attend, we would kindly ask that you RSVP by Monday, January 23rd here.  This will help us anticipate attendance and plan accordingly.  Child-minding will be available that evening for school-aged children, as well.

We look forward to learning with you and understanding how we can better support mental health and well-being for all our children.
