In honour of Child and Youth Mental Health Week, students and staff members from across York Region have been participating in an event aimed at reducing the stigma experienced by those struggling with mental health challenges. Stigma refers to negative stereotypes and is often associated with mental illness. Stigma is a key reason why those experiencing mental health concerns often do not seek help.
Many of our students at Bakersfield wrote words that stigmatize those struggling with mental health on a tongue depressor, and together symbolically ‘broke’ the stigma, offering alternative words that demonstrate care and hope, on their hands or on notes.
We look forward to continuing our learning about supporting good mental health for everyone in the days and weeks ahead.
