The week of November 1 – 8, 2018 marks the 38th annual Holocaust Education Week. This year’s focus is entitled ILLUMINATING THE SHADOWS: Untold Stories of the Holocaust, which sheds light on untold stories, new research, and marginalized histories of the Holocaust.
Bakersfield Public School is proud to be hosting a Holocaust Survivor Speaker. On Thursday, November 8th at 9:30 a.m. students in grades 7 – 8 will have the opportunity to hear our guest speaker Mrs. Anita Ekstein. If you are joining us to hear her speak, please RSVP here : RSVP Link
Anita Ekstein was born in Poland in 1934. In 1941, at the age of 7, Anita and her family were taken to a ghetto, where her mother was taken away and her father in desperation turned to a Polish man, a stranger, and asked the man to save his one and only child. Thanks to her Polish rescuers Anita survived the war. Anita’s parents, grandparents, and many aunts, uncles and cousins were all murdered by the Nazis. In August 1948, Anita arrived in Canada.
Holocaust Education Week brings generations of communities together who share a commitment to learning and explores different national, generational and cultural narratives of the Holocaust and its aftermath.
