Each morning, classes logged in to Google Meet to listen to guest readers read picture books around the themes of diversity, identity, inclusion, equity and acceptance. The messages portrayed in these books were about loving yourself and being proud of who you are.
Affirmation Mirrors have been placed around the school with positive words and quotes. There are questions posted on the top of the mirrors asking students to reflect on who they are, how they want to be seen and why they are important. These mirrors serve as a reminder to be proud of yourself and stay true to who you are.
There are also murals and a ‘real life’ JamBoard around the school that are allowing our students the opportunities to reflect on what they see, think and wonder. Through photographs and a quote about inclusion and belonging, our students are able to see that every person is unique, their voice matters, and that we are each responsible for our own actions.
Our goal is to help students foster a sense of belonging and contribution to Bakersfield, while staying true to themselves. We will continue this work in our school-wide project where our students will have opportunities to be able to see that who they are matters and that their identity is valued.
